Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Charles Whitehead, his Brother Larry, Sister Joyce Larson, Brother-in-Law Joe Larson and his beloved granddaughter Annie Dean.
Tom, along with his team at Litton Industries developed the robots feet for the first landing on the moon. From his Engineering career he developed a love of fine wood working and that became his second career. He carried that love of woodworking over into all facets of his life. From the remodeling of his homes to the numerous swim steps he built for not only his own boats but his friends.
Tom was a great athlete. He was a fierce competitor, whether it was on the golf course, playing pool, in a fishing competition, or just watching his beloved UCLA Bruins with his son Steve when they played USC and his son's Keith and Terry were big USC fans, the competition was monumental.
His passion for the ocean started very young on his beloved Santa Catalina Island to the numerous Sundays at Zuma Beach with his children swimming and teaching them to body surf. It extended deeply to all aspects of his life including his boats, fishing and traveling with his family and friends.
Above all, his family was the most important part of his life. He would travel far and wide to attend his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments and events.
Tom died after a valiant fight with a very rare disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Tom's name to: Cure PSP, Executive Plaza III, 11350 Mc Cormick R., S-906 Hunt Valley, Maryland, 21031 or go to www.curepsp.org.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on September 19, 2009 at 1:30 p.m., at England Family Mortuary, Temecula, CA.
