Obituary

Robert (Red) John Mulvanny, 73, of Murrieta, California, died on June 18, 2025, at Loma Linda University Medical Center after a prolonged illness.

He was born on September 7, 1951, in Milwaukee, WI, to John Francis and Dolores (Ertl). Red married his wife Bonnie on June 26, 1971, and they remained best friends and companions until his death. Red enlisted in the US Navy in 1970, where he served his country for 33 years. He served as an X-ray technician, eventually rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Upon his graduation from Southern Illinois University with a BS in Health Care Services, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the Medical Services Corps. He would also later receive his MS in General Administration in 1997 from Central Michigan University. He would then go on to serve an additional 19 and a half years retiring in 2003 with the rank of Commander. His final duty station, which to him was his most important, was as the Commander of the 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejune, North Carolina.

After retiring from the Navy, Red enjoyed woodworking, watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, and traveling the world with his wife Bonnie. He also had a passion for genealogy which led him to publish two books. The first on his Mulvanny ancestors in 2006 and the second on Bonnie's family in 2012. He also wrote over 500 profiles for military members killed during World War II, including over 240 that were killed during the D-Day landings.

Red is survived by his wife Bonnie, and his four children, Shannon Mulvanny, Sean Mulvanny, Ryan (Robyn) Mulvanny, and Erin (Jonathon) Hoskins. Red is also survived by his 9 grandchildren Kelly Brenya, Tanalei Mulvanny, Stella Mulvanny, Graham Mulvanny, Ashton Mulvanny, Faith Mulvanny, Payton Mulvanny, Madison Hoskins, and Noah Hoskins. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Beth VandenBush, Eileen Cefalu, and Judy Wissell. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Francis and Dolores and his brother Thomas.
