Obituary

U.S. Veteran 1930 was a special year because our father Fred Nathan Quackenbush was born. He was the son of Fred Quackenbush and Pearl Hoyle and grew up on the South side of Chicago, with his three sisters. He had a love for life, people, cooking, traveling, snow-skiing, flying, and especially racing. Sports car racing became a major lifelong passion for him and his boys. Dad also had a love for sailing and the water. Even as a child, he would venture out to Lake Michigan and have a wild time with his closest friends! He and Uncle Bill built a wooden boat from scratch and put in the water. In 1951 -1953 he served in the Army Medical Core. Oh, he had lots of stories during this time, and often reminisced on his trips to Colorado. After the service, he met and married Beverly Meinecke. They had six beautiful children, which he loved and adored. They taught us so many wonderful things about values and respect. One of Dad's favorite sayings was "never judge an Indian until you have walked a mile in their moccasins. Another wise piece of advice was to never give up and be happy. He always said, "I just want you kids to be happy and give it your all! For most of his life his occupation was in sales, which he was a natural. Everyone loved him. He could sell a snow cone to an Eskimo, no doubt. After dad's retirement, he moved to California to help his sons pursue their lifelong dream of running their own business. He was influential in raising his two grandsons, Billy and Kyle and had much fun seeing them grow. Dad was an incredibly laid back guy, with a great sense of humor and adventure. Though he had a huge zest for life, the simplest things for Dad were his greatest pleasures. He was a great cook, and loved to barbeque for his friends and families. He enjoyed dancing to big band music and loved Bing Crosby. Dad was a very giving man. His wealth was not measured by materialism. His riches resided in his heart, which was so enormous. He was positive, warm and loving to everyone. It didn't matter how old or how young, he had a spot for you. He was an amazing Father, Friend, Brother, Uncle, and Husband. And on the special day he was born into this world, we were truly blessed. Papa will be greatly missed. Although his physical life with us has now come to a close, we look forward to the day we will see him again in our spiritual home above. Now a bright star, in the heavens, to help guide us home, we all love you eternally. Visitation on Tuesday October 13, 2009 from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. in our chapel, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. No planned burial
