Obituary

Dorothy Ann Lewis, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026, after spending the day surrounded by her family. She was 91 years old.

Dorothy was born Dorothy Ann Glenn on January 9, 1935, in Nebraska. She moved to California as a young girl and grew up in El Monte, where she attended El Monte High School. It was there, during her junior year, that she met Michael Lewis, the young man who would become her husband and lifelong companion. High school sweethearts, Dorothy and Mike married after graduating in 1953 and went on to share 53 years of marriage before his passing in 2007.

Together, Dorothy and Mike built a life centered on family. They raised their three sons, Jeff, Don, and David, first in Valinda and later in Walnut, California. After retirement, they moved to Wickenburg, Arizona, where they enjoyed many years together. Following Mike's death, Dorothy returned to Southern California and settled in Murrieta so she could once again be close to her family.

Dorothy was tough, feisty, proud, and deeply devoted to the people she loved. Family was at the center of her life, and nowhere was that more evident than in the pride she took in her grandchildren. She rarely missed a game, performance, or important event and could always be counted on to be there, cheering them on. Her love for her family was constant, unmistakable, and one of the defining qualities of her life.

She also knew how to enjoy life. Dorothy loved baseball, especially her beloved Angels, and was an enthusiastic sports fan in general. She enjoyed television and embraced the streaming era so thoroughly that she seemed to have nearly every streaming service available.

Earlier in life, Dorothy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, and collecting decorative plates. She loved cooking for her family, particularly the large Sunday dinners that brought everyone together. At Christmas, her homemade fudge became a family tradition and one of the treats everyone looked forward to each year. She also enjoyed spending time at Lake Havasu and had a lifelong affection for cats, sharing her home with many beloved feline companions over the years.

Dorothy worked for Bank of America for 26 years before retiring in 1990. She took great pride in her work and brought the same determination and strong spirit to her career that she brought to every part of her life.

Her Catholic faith was a deeply important part of who she was and was reflected not only in her devotion to the Church, but also in her service to others. While living in Wickenburg, Dorothy served for many years as a sacristan at St. Anthony's Catholic Church and volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul, helping care for those in need in the community. After moving to Murrieta, she regularly attended Mass at St. Martha's Catholic Church, where her faith continued to provide comfort, community, and meaning throughout the later years of her life.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Lewis; her son, Jeff Lewis; her daughter-in-law, Maxy; and her siblings, Chuck, MaryLou, and Betty. She was the last surviving member of her generation of siblings. She is survived by her sons, Don and David; daughters-in-law Evelyn and Leslie; grandchildren Jade, Megan, Caden, and Malia; great-granddaughter Luna; and the extended family and friends whose lives she touched over more than nine decades.

Those who knew Dorothy will remember a woman with a strong will, a sharp spirit, and an enormous capacity for devotion. She experienced both great joy and profound loss during her lifetime, yet remained fiercely committed to her family and her faith. Her presence was strong, her love was enduring, and the traditions and memories she created will continue through the generations that follow her.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta, California. A celebration luncheon will follow at the Central Park Clubhouse in Murrieta.

Flowers may be sent to St. Martha's Catholic Church for Dorothy's Funeral Mass.
