  1. The one word I can think of to describe John as I’ve come to know him over the last 25 years or so is ‘devoted’. No matter what effort he was involved in – fishing, client counseling, frisbee golf, video games, family events – he always threw himself wholeheartedly into whatever he was doing. His devotion to whatever was the task at hand could never be questioned or doubted, and anyone who joined him in those pursuits could always trust that his devotion and concentration never wavered.
He was also an excellent giver of advice, but never unless it was solicited, except one incident I can think of when he volunteered it. When I followed John and Pam in their move to Temecula and one evening, over food and spirits, mentioned my intention to indulge in my first love by buying horses, John said – pragmatically – “Never trust anything that can walk and shit at the same time.”
John, I will miss you more than you could have known. I could – and will – never think of you without smiling, and that is perhaps your greatest gift of all. Rest well, my friend.
