Joe Luis Moreno

joe moreno
Joe Moreno, born January 1, 1947 in Brawley, CA - raised in Holtville, CA by his mother, Aurelia & father, Julio along with his siblings Danny, Sylvia, Javier and Nancy. Growing up, Joe was in the high school band and also won the Future Farmer of America award, solidifying his place in the 4H Club. After high school, Joe moved to Orange County to attend college. He was employed at Laura Scudders where he met his future wife, Joann. They dated for a year, then married, and Joe continued his education while working 4 part time jobs to support his wife, Joann, and son, Tony, including delivering the LA Times Sunday mornings. He received his A S degree from Orange Coast college and secured 2 full-time jobs at Hughes Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft. While working the day shift at Hughes and 2nd shift at Douglas, Joe still found time to raise his growing family. After the birth of his second son, Mark, Joe decided to stay with Hughes as an aerospace mechanic, building satellites for the space program, including, most notably, the Direct Tv satellite. In the mid-80's Joe participated in a lottery at work to join astronauts in the most recent space shuttle. He was selected as the candidate from his department but due to health reasons was not able to move through the 2nd round. The shuttle he was denied admittance to was the Challenger, which, sadly was destroyed shortly after take-off. That was not the first time Joe was spared from an early demise. During the Vietnam war, he received his draft notice but had just been in a serious motorcycle accident where his life was spared again. This blessing in disguise prevented him from being drafted. Unfortunately, he never learned his lesson from the dangers of riding and years later he was involved in his second major motorcycle accident that left him unable to work for almost a year. Joe & Joann were married for 47 years. They raised 3 children - Tony, Mark and Marla - and he taught them how to hunt, fish, camp, drive stick shift and operate large machinery, perform basic auto repairs and all of life's skills necessary to be successful adults. Joe became a born again Christian in 1978, the year his daughter was born. He was a changed man. This transformation deeply affected how he raised his family and made church attendance a 3x's a week staple in their household. During this time he instilled strong Christian values in his children and taught them to love the Lord with their whole hearts. After his children were raised Joann became a travel agent. During this time Hughes aircraft allowed Joe to travel all over the world for satellite launches. It began with the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and included Russia, Guyana and China. In between work trips Joe and Joann traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, Asia, Mexico and the U.S. In every country they visited, whenever possible, Joe sought out mineral hot springs to revitalize his overworked body. Joe retired in 2006, moved to Anza, built his ranch, was able to enjoy his 4 grandchildren- Katie, Nathan, Jasmin and Sierra- and his great grandson, Dominic. He spent the rest of his life doing what he loved to do, including catching a trophy sail fish in Mexico, shooting his prized trophy elk, "Oscar" during a hunting trip with his son, Mark. O'da lay Joe reached the finish line and went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 6, 2017. He passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family.
